Sheffield is a city in the Yorkshire and the Humber region of South Yorkshire, and is situated at the confluence of 5 rivers. Sheffield won the 2005 Entente Florale competition, an internationally acclaimed horticulture competition, reinforcing their claim to the title of Europe’s greenest city.

 

The natural Sheffield landscape is one of great beauty and attracts countless outdoor adventure enthusiasts from across the globe. Sheffield coasts over 170 woodlands, 78 public parks, 10 public gardens, an extensive National Park and a wide spanning waterway system. As a whole, Sheffield has a projected 61% green space and has an extremely varied landscape, including woodland, parkland, meadows and freshwater habitats.

 

Sheffield also boasts a rich sporting heritage, and is home to various sporting teams, acclaimed events and sporting icons. Currently the most recognisable Sheffield sporting icon is Michael Vaughan, incumbent English cricket captain, who grew up in the region. Adrenaline junkie James Toseland, 2004 and 2007 World Superbike champion, also resides in Sheffield, as does outdoor adventure enthusiast and rock climber Joe Simpson. Sheffield played host to the 1991 World Student Games, and as a result has a comprehensive network of sporting facilities to accommodate various exciting events and sporting action. One of the more impressive facilities is the Don Valley International Athletics Stadium, the largest purpose-build athletics stadium in the UK.
