More about Liverpool

To the more musically inclined, Liverpool was and is still home to the world’s most commercially successful band of all time, the all-conquering Beatles. John, Paul, Ringo and George began their fantastic careers in this lively city before their rise to stardom began in the early sixties.

Liverpool continues to thrive with its diverse culture and having recently celebrated its 800th birthday many have touted the city as a cultural beacon to the world.

During the Second World War Liverpool sustained extremely heavy bombing by the German Luftwaffe, largely destroying the city. This was due to Liverpool’s ports being of huge importance to the war effort. Known to be the second most heavily bombed city in the UK besides London, many reports of damage from the area quashed the actual figures released by the government. This was undertaken to hide from the enemy, the amount of actual damage sustained throughout the conflict.

Over 4,000 Liverpudlians died as a result of blitz, however some 75 millions tons of army supplies passed through the city making it one of the most strategic areas of importance throughout the UK during the war.

445,700 Liverpudlians live in the city today, thousands of which support the cities two major football clubs Liverpool FC and Everton FC. With fierce rivalry between the two teams, games are hotly contested on and off the pitch. Liverpool FC is the most successful team in the history of English football and boasts one of Australia’s proudest exports in the form of adventurous striker Harry Kewell. As a key player for Liverpool FC, Kewell often stuns crowds with his mystical footwork and ability to score.
