Leicester played a pivotal role during the conflict of World War II, particularly in its textile manufacturing capabilities. St Margaret’s works was the largest manufacturer in Leicester throughout the 1940’s and helped the war effort by producing gun parts, components for landing craft and infantry uniforms for the allied soldiers fighting in Europe.
The city also played host to numerous wartime activities including allied airfields, housing of infantry battalions and evacuees from London. The city escaped heavy bombing during the war, however on the night of November 19, 1940 parts of the city were struck killing 40 civilians.
Today Leicester is one of the UK’s largest and most exciting cities in the UK, and certainly the largest in the east midlands. The city is home to the championship club Leicester City FC, whose loyal supporters follow them far and wide in the hope of victory and the elusive FA cup.
Many travellers throughout the UK will be aware of the Caribbean Carnival held on Portobello road in London each year, however many aren’t aware that Leicester’s own Caribbean festival closely rivals Notting Hill in action-packed excitement and size.
