More about Gloucester

Located in the county of Gloucestershire the stunning town of Gloucester sits upon the eastern bank of the River Severn. Originally a port for larger commercial ships, the docks area was largely renovated in the late 1980’s to include shops, luxurious apartments and action-packed nightspots.

Gloucester has had an adventurous past with the hustle and bustle of the Victorian docks during the Industrial revolution right the way back to the cities historic Roman foundations. Gloucester’s surrounding woodlands and fields made the city perfect for manufacturing. The cities great connections to the other industrial hubs through canals, rivers, roads and railways made Gloucester a thriving business centre.

Largely overshadowed by the growth of nearby Bristol, Gloucester forged its name into the history books with the advancement of the jet aircraft, manufactured by the Gloster Aircraft Company. Many accounts still exist of astounded locals staring at the mysterious flying aircraft in the sky, void of all prop engines to power it.

Today Gloucester’s main emphasis is on higher end technological advances and commerce. However Gloucester’s folk traditions are still celebrated today with yearly events hosting introductions into the ancient and entertaining art of Morris Dancing. The younger citizens enjoy Gloucester’s 30 pubs and 4 nightclubs, providing late night action and excitement for the more adventurous.

In July 2007 Gloucester was devastated by immense floods that crippled the city and became known as the greatest peacetime disaster seen in the county. With infrastructure and wooded parklands wiped out, a relief fund was set up to support the residents. Currently £1,280,711.27 has been raised to return the beautiful city of Gloucester to its former glory.
