More about Croydon

Croydon, located 9.5 miles south of Charing Cross, is a large town and major commercial centre in south London. Originally created as a municipal Borough in Surrey in 1883 it wasn’t until 1965 that Croydon became the present-day London Borough of Croydon. As one of the major commercial centres in London, Croydon is alive with world class shopping, top quality restaurants, a long list of cafes & pubs, and a buzzing night life to go with it.

Although Croydon is known mostly as a business and retail centre it has also retained a number of its historic landmarks including four scheduled ancient monuments, six grade 1 listed buildings, and ten designated conservation areas. Such heritage listed locations in Croydon include the famous Croydon Airport House, the stunning Addington Place which was built in the 1770’s, and the present Town Hall which was built in 1895.

Croydon Airport housed the world’s first international terminal, and it was from this location that Amy Johnson made her world renowned solo flight to Darwin, Australia in 1930. When World War II broke out the airport closed and the RAF used the field for military purposes. In 1959 the airport closed and the Airport House is now a heritage listed building.
