More about Kirkwall

Kirkwall is a small town situated on the cost of Mainland Orkney in Scotland with its skyline largely dominated by the spire of St Magnus, the towns Cathedral.  Accessible by ferry from Aberdeen and Lerwick, the town is noted as being a small Scottish outpost with its glowing culture linked with Scandinavia rather than Scotland.

The areas history is well preserved in the town’s architecture and two museums, which hold some astounding artefacts dating back to the days of the Viking conquests. Originally a market and trade town Kirkwall has been linked to some adventurous activities, including illegal distilling operations and whisky smuggling. Eventually legalised, the distilling now takes place in the Highland Park Distillery, Scotland’s most northern whisky producer.

Kirkwall has been well preserved and many of its original buildings are still standing in the centre of the small town. Dating back to medieval times the paved walkways are now often used as shortcuts by the town’s drivers. Unlike most UK towns, the area surrounding Kirkwall is devoid of woodlands due to its coastal position. Rugged grassland makes up the surrounding area with thunderous seas crashing upon the steep cliffs minutes walk from the bustling streets.
