More about Harrogate

Harrogate gained considerable fame as a spa town when the first mineral spring was discovered in 1571. Thought to possess medicinal properties, the town was widely publicised and became incredibly popular amongst the English elite and nobility during the 19th century.

Despite its popularity as a spa town, Harrogate was primarily a centre of the woollen industry in its earlier years. Throughout World War two the town was used as a base for governmental offices, as it escaped the carnage brought upon London and other major cities during the blitz.

Today however, the town operates as a commercial centre, with conference, exhibitions and trade fairs dominating proceedings. The area has become well known for its teashops, flower shows, turkish baths, antique shops, and for the Harrogate International Conference Centre.  Each year thousands of novelists descend on Harrogate to take part in the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival, now Europe’s biggest crime writing event.

Harrogate once again gained worldwide news coverage in 2007 when a 10th century hoard of Viking treasure was discovered. The haul included 700 coins and valuables and quickly became known as the Harrogate hoard, described as the most important find of its type in Britain for 150 years.
