More about Crewe

Crewe, with a population of over 67,600 people, is a town in South Cheshire in England. Crewe, once a country village with only 70 residents, became the site for the Grand Junction Railway Company’s locomotive works and railway station in the late 1830’s. This construction put the small village of Crewe on the UK map creating jobs and turning it into an important passenger stop for travellers of the UK.

Crewe’s most notable sporting achievements have been accomplished by the local football team, the Crewe Alexander F.C., for a long time recognised as one of English footballs under achievers. Crewe is also home to the Crewe Wolves Rugby League club, and also the Crewe and Nantwich Rugby Union Football Club. Crewe was once home to the fastest and longest speedway track in the UK, in the pioneer days of speedway racing Crewe was a popular destination, home to the Crewe Kings raceway team.

Although Crewe only took shape in the late 1830’s the city is still populated with historic landmarks, and heritage listed buildings. One such landmark is the Crewe Lyceum Theatre, a Grade II listed building, built in 1911 is now home to the town’s theatre productions, providing all who attend with an entertaining night of shows and ballets, sitting amongst the beautiful Edwardian designed interiors.
